Championship roundup: Millwall hit late leveller to deny Sunderland | Championship

Sunderland were denied three points in dramatic circumstances as Millwall’s Femi Azeez levelled three minutes into stoppage time, earning the hosts a 1-1 draw. Aaron Connolly’s goal had put the Black Cats ahead in a a game heavily delayed by medical emergencies in the crowd, but they were unable to hold out.

Chris Wilder called Sheffield United’s 2-2 draw at Coventry “a point gained”, despite seeing his side pegged back twice in a hard-fought game at the CBS Arena. Tyrese Campbell opened the scoring before Norman Bassette scored his first Coventry goal. Jesurun Rak-Sakyi put the Blades back in front before they had Anel Ahmedhodzic sent off for grabbing Bassette by the throat and throwing him to the floor in a rush of blood just before half-time. Coventry piled on the pressure in the second half and Bobby Thomas headed them level with 10 minutes remaining.

Wilder said: “We showed that we’re prepared to defend by hook or by crook, the only disappointing thing for us was that we had nothing going forward, no stretching the team. It was always going to be a tough game. I think if you look at the players and the composition of the opposition’s squad I do believe it is top five or six.”

Scott Parker expressed his relief after his Burnley side survived a late onslaught from Bristol City at Ashton Gate to seal a 1-0 victory. Jaidon Anthony’s 23rd-minute shot from close range – after goalkeeper Max O’Leary had dived to palm out an effort from former City player Josh Brownhill – proved enough, but Burnley had to weather a storm in the closing stages during which City felt they were denied a penalty when the ball struck Brownhill on an arm.

“Of course there was some relief at the end,” said Parker. “After an international break we have come to a very difficult venue in poor weather for a 12.30pm kick-off against good opponents and come away with all three points.”

The Wycombe midfielder Luke Leahy had his penalty saved before Joe Low nodded in a third with 20 minutes left, and Darikwa pulled a late goal back.

Earlier at the Croud Meadow, Aaron Pierre put Shrewsbury ahead with John Marquis tapping in a second, but Birmingham‘s Tomoki Iwata reduced the deficit before half-time. Tom Bloxham restored Shrewsbury’s advantage early in the second half and although Jay Stansfield slotted in a penalty, there was no more late drama.

Emmanuel Latte Lath struck a 12-minute hat-trick as Middlesbrough hammered Oxford 6-2 at the Kassam Stadium, with Finn Azaz scoring two and making two. It came after a stunning first-half turnaround from Boro who fell behind in the 24th minute – with Ivory Coast international Latte Lath at the heart of it. It is the first time since 1947 that Middlesbrough have scored four goals or more in three consecutive league games.

West Brom ended their four-game run without a home goal but were held to a 2-2 draw by Norwich. First-half strikes from Mason Holgate and Josh Maja were cancelled out by Emiliano Marcondes and a Torbjorn Heggem own goal as the hosts were again made to wait for a win at the Hawthorns.

Jerry Yates ensured Derby left Deepdale with a share of the spoils as the Rams drew 1-1 with Preston. The 28-year-old took advantage of sloppy North End defending in the 29th minute to secure a fifth draw in seven Championship matches for Paul Warne’s men. Sam Greenwood had opened the scoring with a delightful 23rd-minute header and, while Paul Heckingbottom will have been disappointed to drop more points from a winning position, the former Sheffield United manager has still only lost one league match at Deepdale since replacing Ryan Lowe in August.

Luton bounced back from their 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Middlesbrough before the international break with a welcome three points and clean sheet by beating a wasteful Hull 1-0 at Kenilworth Road. Luton took the lead against the run of play on 33 minutes when a Shandon Baptiste corner caused problems, flicking off a defender’s head and landing at the feet of Mark McGuinness who was able to swivel and half volley in his first goal for the club.

Di’Shon Bernard cancelled out Ollie Tanner’s opener to earn Sheffield Wednesday a point in a 1-1 draw with Cardiff at Hillsborough. Tanner fired the Bluebirds ahead on 34 minutes as they sought a first win in three matches but it took just two minutes for Bernard to level the scores.

Ben Gibson’s own goal gifted a point to QPR, who remain bottom of the table and without a home win this season after a 1-1 draw with Stoke. And Blackburn’s game with Portsmouth was a casualty of Storm Bert, with the pitch ruled unplayable after an 11am pitch inspection.
