‘We have 10 finals’ – Guardiola on Manchester City’s race for Champions League qualification

Pep Guardiola admits his Manchester City side have “10 finals” if they are to salvage their season and qualify for the Champions League next term.

Speaking after City’s 1-0 defeat to top-four rivals Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Guardiola said his team need to start winning games if they are to remain in contention for qualification to Europe’s elite club competition.

With 10 league games left to play, City are currently in fourth spot, just a point ahead of Chelsea and Brighton and four points behind Forest.

The City boss believed his team dominated the game against Nuno Espirito Santo’s team but said that squandering possession late on ultimately cost his side.

“It was a tight game. We controlled the transitions really well. We created not a lot of chances but defended really well,” Guardiola told TNT Sports.

“But at the end we lost one transition, we lost the easy ball and they score.

“They defended really well and we could not find the precise [finish] in the last moment.

“We have 10 games to qualify, you have to win games to qualify [for the Champions League]. And we are going to the next one.”

Guardiola also believes the league is getting more competitive each year and recognises the task his players have between now and the end of the season.

“We knew it before we arrived that the Premier League every season is better and better,” Guardiola added.

“We have 10 finals, and the next one we start.”

City are next in action when they host Brighton on Saturday.
