Leicester City v Manchester United: Line-ups, stats and preview

Manchester United finally showed glimpses of what they could be under Ruben Amorim with a scintillating display to see off Real Sociedad in the Europa League last night.

United swept aside the Liga club with Bruno Fernandes scoring a hat-trick, including two penalties, in a 4-1 win that completed a 5-2 aggregate triumph.

The challenge now is to replicate that performance level on a regular basis, starting on Sunday at second-from-bottom Leicester.

United are 14th in the Premier League and Amorim is determined to improve on that before the season is out.

He said: “Everything is important. And we need to continue with this feeling that we can win games and then games after games. It doesn’t matter what rest or the times to prepare the next game, we can do it.

“We have to be humble and forget the table and face Leicester like we faced Real Sociedad. We just need to win to improve our position in the table and the most important thing is continuing with this feeling of winning and that we are improving as a team.”

United will come up against a familiar face this weekend in Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The Dutchman was part of Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff and then led the team on an interim basis until Amorim took over.

He has not found it easy at Leicester and they have gone a record six top-flight games at home without a point or a goal.

That has inevitably led to disquiet among the supporters and Van Nistelrooy is desperate to give them something to cheer about.

“The recent game against Chelsea and the change of structure was a positive,” he said. “It’s something we want to build on and develop and do better in a home game.

“I felt the away support was unbelievable which helped us a lot. As a manager and as a squad, we realise there are some sections who sometimes go against the team when things are tough but there is definitely a big section among our own fans who are supporting us and I want to emphasise that they are there.

“With our performance, you see what the reaction of the crowd is. That for us is key to bring that on the pitch on Sunday and get the crowd behind us.”

Team news for Leicester City v Manchester United

Leicester have a near full-strength squad to choose from with only winger Abdul Fatawu unavailable.

Full-back Ricardo Pereira made a late cameo at Chelsea last week, his first appearance for four months, but may have to settle for a place on the bench with Van Nistelrooy set to stick with his 5-2-1-2 formation.

United should have Manuel Ugarte available again and he may replace Casemiro.

Mason Mount will start on the bench and Amorim is hopeful Harry Maguire may also be fit enough to be named in the squad. Patrick Dorgu serves the second game of a three-match domestic ban.
