Sony allegedly working on a big 200 MP sensor for main cameras

Samsung’s ISOCELL HP9 200 MP sensor has been a success in periscope telephoto cameras, starting with the vivo X100 Ultra and continuing with the X200 Pro, Xiaomi 15 Ultra, and soon the vivo X200 Ultra. Likewise, the 200 MP ISOCELL HP2 has been featured in the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra‘s main camera.

This is a 1/1.3″ type sensor, by the way. A new rumor out of China now claims Sony is working on a big 200 MP sensor of its own, for use in main cameras in flagship smartphones arriving later this year – the ones that will be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9500 or the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2.

Sony’s sensor will be larger than 1/1.3″, which has the potential to make it better than Samsung’s, at least when it comes to sheer light intake capabilities. There are unfortunately no other details about it, but it’s good to see Sony actively working to provide some competition for Samsung’s 200 MP offerings. More options for device makers can only, in the end, benefit us consumers.
