Darwin Nunez has admitted he is “not doing what he should” at Liverpool but is hoping to forget his Anfield woes while on international duty.
Nunez will spend the next week with Uruguay as they face two important World Cup qualifiers against world champions Argentina and Bolivia.
The former Benfica man will relish the opportunity to link up with his country after a miserable spell on Merseyside that saw him miss a penalty in the Champions League shoot-out defeat to Paris Saint-Germain while he was ineffective after coming off the bench in Sunday’s EFL Cup final loss to Newcastle.

The ball just doesn’t want to go in – Nunez
Nunez told El Pais: “I know I am not doing what I should. The ball just doesn’t want to go in.
“It’s difficult because when you’re doing well, like when I came on against PSG [setting up Harvey Elliott for the winner at the Parc des Princes], your confidence changes, with the idea of being able to break it in the next match. But then you get a slump.
“I just want to forget what’s happening there and, besides, there is nothing nicer for a player to wear the shirt of your country.”
The 25-year-old has been criticised by Reds boss Arne Slot for his workrate and has contributed just seven goals despite Liverpool cruising towards the Premier League title.
Nunez eager to stay at Liverpool
His form has led to speculation Nunez may be allowed to leave Liverpool in the summer, but the rangy striker is determined to knuckle down and prove his worth.
He added: “These are moments that one goes through in football. I’m not someone who throws in the towel because they don’t play, but instead I’m going to keep working so I can play.”
Salah form has shone a light on Nunez – Kuyt
Former Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt says the exploits of Mohamed Salah, who has scored 32 times in all competitions this season, has made Nunez’s tally look even worse.
The Dutchman, who will turn out for Liverpool Legends against Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday, told PA Sport: “You always have to be at your best to stay at Liverpool and every player has to perform day in, day out, and you know if you are not performing another player will be ready to fill your place.
“If you know Arne Slot a little bit every day he will have tried to push Darwin to get the best out of him so he will never stop doing that and then the player decides himself whether he will play or not because he will have to perform.
“When you have a team-mate like Mo Salah – or in my time Fernando Torres – and these guys are making goalscoring so easy all the supporters want you to make as many goals as well.
“Darwin is pushing himself very hard, sometimes doing well and sometimes not scoring the goals he wanted himself, and that makes it difficult because the pressure is so big.”
