Tottenham captain Son in ‘excellent physical condition’ despite more rest under Postecoglou

Tottenham skipper Heung-Min Son says he is in the best shape of his career.

The 32-year-old has taken over the heavy responsibility of leading Spurs since Harry Kane moved on to Bayern Munich two seasons ago.

But the South Korean international has had to do a lot of legwork this season under Ange Postecoglou, as the North London club navigate all English competitions and the Europa League.

It has led to Son being rested by his head coach for some games, including last week’s 2-0 defeat to Fulham in the Premier League.

As a result, questions have been asked for the winger as to whether he has the capability to play week-in, week-out anymore.

Speaking on international duty with South Korea, Son said: “As I’ve repeatedly said, I’m in excellent physical condition. I believe I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been.

“Since we’ve had so many matches, I think my club manager made those decisions to create better situations.”

Son has made 40 appearances across all competitions in 2024-25, including eight in the Europa League.

It is the only competition Spurs can still win after being knocked out of the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and out of contention in the Premier League.

It may be one of the last chances he gets to lift a trophy with the club, as questions remain over whether Spurs are set to extend his contract.

Son has been an inspiration for so many wingers coming through in the next generation, and he gave his thoughts on who he thinks is currently the best young talent in the world.

Speaking to GOAL, he said: “Lamine Yamal is top-5 best wingers in the world right now..

“He is unbelievable. At this age, the way he performs is just incredible and I’m enjoying every bit.

“It’s a good thing that he’s still so young, he has so much more room for improvement — in the next years, he’ll be top, number one.”
