It is set to be a summer of upheaval at Manchester United.
The club have underperformed again this season and will resume Premier League action next week in 13th place with the Europa League the main focus over the remaining weeks.
And then the real work will start as Ruben Amorim and the club’s recruitment team – led by technical director Jason Wilcox – will attempt to overhaul a bloated squad and keep the club within the narrow confines of PSR regulations.
It is a balancing act that depends largely on player sales. The Manchester Evening News recently reported United were hoping to shed at least 10 players this summer, including high earners Marcus Rashford, Casemiro and Antony.
Rashford will not be short of suitors, even if Aston Villa don’t take up their option to make his loan deal permanent, while Antony’s loan spell at Real Betis has shown he is a better player than the one who flopped at Old Trafford.
If United can shift some of the deadwood, that would leave some wiggle room to bring fresh players in.
Here, we outline what a good summer window could mean for United.
Goalkeepers
In an ideal world, Amorim would like to move on the error-prone Andre Onana and there is interest from the Saudi Pro League in the Cameroonian.
Back-up Altay Bayindir is eager to further his career elsewhere and veteran Tom Heaton is set to retire so United may require at least two new shot-stoppers.
Antwerp’s Senne Lammens and Toulouse’s Guillaume Restes have been mentioned as targets with the former also interesting Manchester City and Newcastle. A cheap number two would also be needed.
Defence
Amorim’s preference for a 3-4-2-1 formation, and the expected departures of Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof, mean a central defender is a priority. On the plus side, both Leny Yoro and Lisandro Martinez will hope for injury-free seasons while Ayden Heaven’s rapid rise to first-team contention means United probably need to sign just one more centre-half. They have been linked with Turkey international Yusuf Akcicek who plays under Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce.
In the wing-back positions, the signing of Patrick Dorgu has solved the long-standing problem on the left side. They would be even stronger if Luke Shaw’s bad luck with injuries came to an end.
The right wing-back slot could be taken by Diogo Dalot, who remains one of United’s more consistent performers.

Midfield
Where to start?
Christian Eriksen and Casemiro are likely to leave while Kobbie Mainoo’s career has stalled due to injury.
United need at least one more defensive midfielder alongside Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte. Jobe Bellingham fits the profile of the kind of player United are targeting, a talented teenager that can develop under Amorim. Sunderland would likely sell for anything over £30million, although it may depend on whether the Wearsiders can gain promotion this season. Bellingham already has the physical stature to cope with the rigours of Premier League football.
Amorim plays with two narrow number 10s, and it makes sense for Bruno Fernandes to occupy one of those slots. The Portuguese’s numbers speak for themselves and a more advanced role would suit him perfectly.
Next to him, United should target Marco Asensio. The Spain international has flourished on loan at Villa but there is no automatic clause to make the deal permanent, enabling United to swoop.
Strikers
For all the talk of Amorim being reunited with Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, there is only one man United should be targeting this summer and that is Victor Osimhen.
The Nigeria international was sent on loan to Galatasaray after Chelsea failed to do a deal with Napoli on deadline day.
Osimhen would add physicality, pace and finishing ability to a United side that has lacked a proper number nine this season. He wouldn’t come cheap but, at 26, would arrive in his prime.

Squad players
Amorim would likely prefer to sell the likes of Joshua Zirkzee and Alejandro Garnacho – and probably Rasmus Hojlund – but finding a buyer may be difficult.
Amad Diallo’s versatility is useful while Mason Mount could be like a new signing if he can finally prove his fitness.
Matthijs De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui can provide defensive cover.
Potential United XI:
Lammens; Maguire, Yoro, Akcicek; Dalot, Dorgu; Mainoo, Bellingham; Fernandes, Asensio; Osimhen
