Unlike Android phones, iPhones have yet to introduce 8K video recording. While the iPhone 16 series could offer high-resolution video recording the company never really implemented it. Now, a tipster with a solid track record when it comes to Apple leaks says the iPhone 17 will finally bring 8K capture.
As of now, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus can record 4K videos at up to 60fps, while the Pro and Pro Max can go up to 120fps. According to some internal rumors, Apple was ready to offer 8K video recording with the current iPhone 16 lineup, but the telephoto sensor used for the Pro and Pro Max was the bottleneck.
Recording at 8K resolution requires a camera sensor with a resolution of around 35MP, and the iPhone’s sensor is 12MP. According to Apple, it would be confusion if you can’t shoot 8K videos with the telephoto unit and are thus unable to switch between all cameras during 8K recording.
In contrast Android OEMs prefer to offer the highest possible recording resolution for each camera sensor.
If the iPhone 17 series is to support 8K video recording, this in turn means that Apple is planning to upgrade the telephoto sensor to a higher resolution.
