UEFA to investigate Real Madrid quartet, including Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr

UEFA is to investigate the conduct of four Real Madrid players following their Champions League win over city rivals Atletico two weeks ago.

Madrid lost the second leg of their round of 16 tie 1-0 at the Metropolitano but progressed on a penalty shoot-out, Antonio Rudiger slotting home the winning spot-kick to complete a 4-2 triumph.

Madrid’s players celebrated wildly in front of the home fans, prompting missiles to be thrown in their direction.

Rudiger was caught on camera performing a throat-slitting gesture while Kylian Mbappe grabbed his crotch. Vinicius Jr became embroiled in a slanging match with Atletico fans and Ceballos made a crude gesture in their direction.

A UEFA statement read: “A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to investigate allegations of indecent conduct by Real Madrid CF players (Antonio Rüdiger, Kylian Mbappé, Daniel Ceballos Fernández and Vinicius Junior) during the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 match between Club Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid CF on 12 March 2025.

“Further information regarding this matter will be made available in due course.”

Madrid will play Arsenal in the quarter-finals with the four players at risk of suspension if they are found to have committed an offence.

Arsenal host Madrid at the Emirates on April 8 with the return in the Spanish capital the week after.
