Louis Gossett Jr. Remembered on 1st Anniversary of His Death by Son Satie

Satie Gossett is remembering his late father Louis Gossett Jr. on the first anniversary of the actor’s death.

Louis died on March 29, 2024, due to complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. He was 87.

To mark the year since his father’s death, Satie, 50, shared a moving tribute on Instagram on Saturday. His post featured a picture of himself and his dad on the day Louis got his filmmaker son his first camera.

As Satie explained in the caption, “Here’s a pic of me getting my first camera for my birthday which set me on this myopic, self loathing, self deprecating journey of being a creative.”

Satie also took a moment to reflect on the loss of his dad.

“One year ago today my pop passed. Time went so fast yet so slow. But whatever rate it goes, time always moves regardless of what happens in life and we have to deal, we have to heal. But yet I resent how I feel but there’s no escape so I have to deal. (Bars).”

He added a message for Louis: “Dad, please keep the suckas off me. Provide me with the guidance to stay steadfast because I’m already tired. I’m tired of trying and maybe I need to do something to else.”

Louis spoke to PEOPLE just months before his death and joked about his idea of the afterlife.

“I’m not afraid to die and the fact of going to heaven. I know they are having some great concerts up there,” the Academy Award winner said at the time. “I know that and my heroes and heroines are up there and I think it’s different from what we think it is.”

He added: “I think it’s going to be a great time.”

Louis got his start on Broadway and had roles in a slew of movies, TV shows and stage plays. One of his first Hollywood roles was starring alongside Sydney Poitier in 1961’s A Raisin in the Sun after doing the same show on Broadway.

“I was in awe of that man — his experience and strength. I supported him, and he supported me,” Louis told PEOPLE of Poitier, who was the first Black man to win an Academy Award for Best Actor. Similarly, Louis was the first Black man to win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1982.
