Woman Considering Faking Sick to Avoid Vacation with Husband’s Family

  • A woman is considering faking an illness in order to avoid a vacation with her in-laws.
  • She detailed the ordeal in a post on the U.K.-based Mumsnet forum.
  • The woman said she would rather use the money for a trip for herself and her immediate family instead.

A woman says she is considering faking an illness in order to avoid a vacation that involves her husband’s family.

Sharing her sense of dread in a post on the U.K.-based forum Mumsnet, the woman explained that she and her husband booked a stay in a villa with her parents-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law and their kids as part of a “big family trip.”

Though she confessed to having initially gone along with the plan, since her husband was “so keen,” the woman continued, however, that, as the date approaches, she’s having second thoughts, and she has accused her husband of “totally ignoring” her concerns.

“Firstly, it’s not my idea of a holiday,” the woman wrote, further explaining, “We’re all staying in one big villa (read: zero privacy), and MIL [mother-in-law] is already sending out lists of ‘things we should bring,’ like it’s a school trip.”

“SIL [sister-in-law] is lovely but very intense, and their kids are wild,” she continued. “Ours are younger and still nap, but I just know that’s not going to be respected, and we’ll be the boring ones for trying to keep any kind of routine.”

The woman also complained about the cost of the trip and said she would’ve preferred to save the money for a vacation with just her kids and husband instead.

As she asked if she was in the wrong “to feel completely miserable about this?” the woman added, “It’s too late to back out now, but I’m genuinely considering feigning illness the week before and sending [my husband] and the kids without me.”

In the comments section, the woman was met with advice from other users on the forum, with many agreeing that while the trip didn’t sound ideal, they wouldn’t cancel going.

“It sounds like my idea of hell, but it would be really obvious if you suddenly became ‘sick’ the week before and could no longer go,” one person commented.

They added, “You’ve agreed to go and have already paid, so I think you need to suck it up and make the best of it. Having a bad attitude won’t help you, though.”

Sharing advice for the trip, another wrote, “I’ve been on holidays like this and the important thing is to carve out time just for yourselves. So that means going for a coffee alone, taking the kids out to a park/day out etc.”

A third person added, “I think you’ll have to smile through gritted teeth and get on with it — might not be that bad once you get there. Think also of all the people who won’t get any holiday this year. Your kids will.”
