After a 2-1 defeat at Napoli on Sunday that left them four points behind eighth-placed Fiorentina in Serie A, the Coppa Italia increasingly looks like Milan’s only hope of qualifying for Europe next season.
Reports this week have suggested that manager Sergio Conceicao, who was only appointed in December, will not be at the club next season, but the Portuguese was encouraged by his side’s second-half response at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona as they prepare for the first leg of their semi-final against Inter.
“I saw a different attitude,” Conceicao told DAZN. “You need quality, but also the courage, desire and hunger to take men on.
“If you struggle off the ball, then you are not fresh to attack with quality when you do get the ball. I have a lot of faith in this squad – it’s a healthy group that wants to change this atmosphere. On Wednesday, we have the chance to do that.”

Inter are three points above Napoli at the top of the league after a seventh win on their current eight-game unbeaten run in all competitions, scoring twice inside the first 30 minutes in a 2-1 home victory over Udinese on the same day as Milan fell 20 points behind them.
The nine-time Coppa Italia champions’ run of two consecutive triumphs ended in the round of 16 last season, and their attempt to go all the way this time has been helped by the form of midfielder Nicolo Barella, whose tally of eight assists is the most of any player in this season’s competition.
“When we play like that, it’s hard to play against us,” goalkeeper Yann Sommer said of their performance against Udinese.
“We created chances and scored goals at good times. We’re happy because we put in the right sort of display. We have to take these opportunities.”

AC Milan v Inter team news
Milan midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek fell ill on Sunday morning and required surgery on acute abscessed appendicitis.
Defender Malick Thiaw was an unused substitute after suffering from a bug and Rafael Leao started on the bench because the forward felt pain in his calf.
The pair are in contention to start this time along with forward Santiago Gimenez, who began in reserve against Napoli because he played twice for Mexico during the international break.
Kristjan Asllani is suspended for Inter, with manager Simone Inzaghi suggesting that he might have rested Hakan Calhanoglu but for the midfielder’s absence.

Calhanoglu played throughout both legs of Turkiye’s Nations League play-off win over Hungary last month.
Left-back Federico Dimarco set up both Inter goals against Udinese in a 63-minute appearance after almost a month out with a hamstring injury.
Davide Frattesi, who scored their second goal, is a doubt with a knock to the Italy midfielder’s foot, and Inzaghi said that Marko Arnautovic, who opened the scoring, asked to be substituted in the 55th minute because the forward was tired following international duty with Austria.
Milan’s Filippo Terracciano and Inter’s Denzel Dumfries will be suspended for the return match if they are booked.
