Report, result, goals as Blues go fourth… after VAR rules out spectacular strikes

Enzo Fernandez headed the 50th-minute winner as Chelsea beat Tottenham to move fourth in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge – after both sides had goals ruled out.

Returning Chelsea top scorer Cole Palmer found Fernandez in space in front of goal to score his fifth league goal of the season and give his side a deserved lead against a Tottenham team who failed to have an attempt on target before the break.

VAR chalks off Caicedo, Sarr goals

Moises Caicedo volleyed in a second for Chelsea six minutes later with a precise and fierce finish after Spurs had partially cleared, only for a lengthy Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check to deem Levi Colwill offside.

Another review 21 minutes from time denied Pape Sarr an equaliser after the midfielder caught goalkeeper Robert Sanchez out from 40 yards, with a check concluding that the substitute had fouled Caicedo in the build-up to the goal.

The result moves Chelsea a point above fifth-placed Manchester City, while only victory would have lifted Tottenham to 13th above Manchester United.

Chelsea vs Tottenham: Tempers fray

The hosts made a brisk start in a first half of few chances, hitting a post when Micky van de Ven’s clearance hit Jackson after Guglielmo Vicario had denied the returning forward from Trevoh Chalobah’s clever pass.

Vicario came to the rescue again to brilliantly tip Jadon Sancho’s angled drive from close range over the crossbar shortly before half-time.

After Fernandez evaded Destiny Udogie and Micky van de Ven to emphatically meet Palmer’s cross and break the deadlock, the increasingly fractious nature of a contest containing 10 bookings was heightened by VAR interventions.

Caicedo’s beautiful finish was matched by the outlandishness of Sarr’s strike, Sanchez spared considerable embarrassment when the goal was disallowed to consign Tottenham to a 28th defeat in their last 58 games, including 16 in 30 league matches this season.

Tottenham, Chelsea fixtures

Spurs’ season hinges on their Europa League quarter-final against Eintracht Frankfurt, who are third in Germany and visit London for the first leg on April 10 (20:00 BST).

With other results generally going their way this week, Chelsea will hope to increase the gap they hold above City and sixth-placed Newcastle when they visit Brentford on Sunday (14:00).

Tottenham will simultaneously seek a first league win in five games when they host rock-bottom Southampton, who they beat 5-0 away on December 15.
