Reds suffer rare defeat as title-race lead stays at 11 points

Liverpool missed the chance to stretch their lead at the top of the Premier League to 14 points as three goals in the space of 14 minutes gave Fulham a 3-2 win at Craven Cottage.

The Reds knew they could all but seal the title with victory following Arsenal’s 1-1 draw at Everton on Saturday, and they took a 14th-minute lead through Alexis MacAllister.

But Fulham’s reply in punishing a haphazard Liverpool defence was magnificent, Ryan Sessegnon’s smart finish followed by a deflected Alex Iwobi effort and a sublime individual goal from Rodrigo Muniz.

Luis Diaz pulled one back for Liverpool with 18 minutes remaining, yet Arne Slot’s side could not find the equaliser as Fulham held on for a deserved win that boosts their hopes of European football.

Liverpool’s advantage over Arsenal is still a very impressive 11 points that will almost certainly be too much to overcome, but what they hoped would be triumphant march to the title is right now more akin to a stumble to the line.

Fulham v Liverpool

The hosts were unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty early on following some sloppy play from Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate.

Andreas Pereira laid the ball off for Rodrigo Muniz after Konate was dispossessed, but Muniz was not given the chance to turn into an unguarded net after both he and Pereira were brought down by Virgil van Dijk and Caoimhin Kelleher respecitvely.

VAR checked the incidents but did not adjudge either play to have been fouled, the Van Dijk collision seemingly accidental, and Liverpool made the most of that let-off when MacAllister won a second ball in midfield and powered a drive beyond Bernd Leno in fine style.

But Liverpool continued to look vulnerable at the back and produced a response as Ryan Sessegnon found the bottom-right corner with a first-time strike after the visitors had failed to deal with. Pereira’s right-wing cross.

They completed the turnaround during a nightmare sequence for Andy Robertson, which started when the Scotland defender’s risky cross-field pass was intercepted by Alex Iwobi.

Iwobi’s initial effort was blocked, but Robertson then lost an aerial duel with Pereira, allowing Iwobi a second chance to take aim and beat Kelleher with a strike that deflected in off Robertson.

It soon got worse for Liverpool courtesy of a piece of brilliance from Muniz, who used his physicality to keep Van Dijk at bay with his back to goal before flicking the ball over the Dutchman head and firing through the legs of Kelleher.

Liverpool were better after the break, Diogo Jota denied by Leno and the largely invisible Mohamed Salah blazing over, but it was Diaz who eventually gave them hope when he stabbed home from Conor Bradley’s lay-off.

Harvey Elliott then cracked the crossbar with a curling effort and he later tested Leno after Federico Chiesa had done the same, but Liverpool end the weekend in the rare position of having slightly surrendered ground in the title race.
