Champions League: Bayern Munich v Inter: Line-ups, stats and preview

Match Preview for Bayern Munich v Inter Milan

Inter Milan and Bayern Munich will renew acquaintances for a repeat of the 2010 Champions League final and, though the cast of characters has obviously changed considerably in the nearly 15 years since the Nerazzurri’s victory in Madrid secured a famous treble for Jose Mourinho, recent developments suggests the outcome will likely be similar in the quarter-final first leg at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern are dealing with several injuries to key players as they aim to pull off a Bundesliga and Champions League double in their first season under Vincent Kompany.

Leading Bayer Leverkusen by six points in the Bundesliga, Bayern should still have enough to reclaim that title from Xabi Alonso’s men. However, a hamstring tear suffered by winger Jamal Musiala in Friday’s league win over Augsburg has left a squad that already looked improperly equipped to beat the Serie A leaders over two legs looking even weaker.

That will give encouragement to an Inter side aiming to replicate the feat of the legendary 2009-10 side, with Simone Inzaghi’s men still competing for all three competitions this season.

There are signs that Inter’s exertions may be taking a toll. After being held to 1-1 draw by AC Milan in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-finals, Inter let a 2-0 lead slip in a 2-2 draw at Parma at the weekend.

Inter’s slip-up has provided Napoli with the chance to cut the gap in the race for the Scudetto to just one point in their game with Bologna on Monday.

But of more immediate concern to Inter in the wake of their collapse against Parma will be the looming threat of Bayern talisman Harry Kane.

Only Barcelona forward Raphinha (11) has scored more goals in this season’s competition than Kane (10) and, with Inter appearing very vulnerable at the back, the former Tottenham man appears the most likely candidate to turn the tie in the favour of a depleted Bayern team.

Team news for Bayern Munich v Inter Milan

After it was confirmed he will leave the club following their campaign in the expanded Club World Cup, Thomas Muller could have a huge role to play for Bayern following the devastating injury to Musiala.

The situation could have been substantially worse for Bayern, with Kane suffering a sprained ankle against Augsburg. However, the England striker trained on Monday, as did Leon Goretzka, who has been dealing with back problems.

By contrast, Kingsley Coman’s lingering foot problem shows no sign of abating. Coman was not present at training and looks set to miss out along with long-term absentees Alphonso Davies, Dayot Upamecano and Manuel Neuer.

It is good news for Inter, though, with Alessandro Bastoni set to play despite a knee injury scare against Parma.

Despite only training individually on Monday, Federico Dimarco is expected to be available, while midfielder Nicolo Barella will return from his domestic suspension.

Denziel Dumfries (hamstring), Mehdi Taremi (adductor) will miss out, while Kristjan Asllani is suspended.
