Inter have been ‘struggling for two months’ but ‘everyone only talks Bayern injuries’ – Inzaghi

Inter manager Simone Inzaghi has said his selection problems are comparable to the injury list facing Bayern Munich as the teams prepare to meet in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie on Tuesday (20:00 BST).

Defender Denzel Dumfries, midfielder Piotr Zielinski and forward Mehdi Taremi are out for the Italian side, while Albania international Kristjan Asllani is suspended and wideman Federico Dimarco is “more no than yes”, according to Inzaghi.

The Italian is hopeful that centre-back Alessandro Bastoni and midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu will overcome issues and be fit to start against the German leaders and six-time European champions.

“My boys should be applauded more because we’ve been struggling for two months,” said Inzaghi. “I find myself with 14 players and everyone only talks about Bayern’s absences.

“But we’re moving forward, knowing that we’ll face a huge obstacle, with great confidence and knowing that we’ll have to be organised and determined.”

Bayern Munich vs Inter: Hosts ‘favourites’

Jamal Musiala, who scored Bayern’s equaliser in their 3-1 Bundesliga win at Augsburg on Friday, is the hosts’ newest absentee after being replaced by Thomas Muller during that victory because of a hamstring injury.

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, defenders Hiroki Ito and Dayot Upamecano and widemen Alphonso Davies and Kingsley Coman are also out, while Raphael Guerreiro and Aleksandar Pavlovic are doubts.

“We will face a great team who, I think, are favourites to win,” observed Inzaghi. “The boys know everything we gave to be here – we both deserved to reach the quarter-finals. We have to be a team and try to get a result at a very difficult stadium.

“They’re a team I’ve always found intense since the first times I faced them. They have excellent players and, like us, they have some important absences. We, too, are here with five absences.

“We have to show we are a team and everyone will have to participate. There will be moments in which we will all have to suffer together.”

Inter injuries: Sommer calls for courage

Inter are four points clear in Serie A with a game less to play than second-placed Napoli after the Nerazzurri were held 2-2 at Parma on Saturday despite leading 2-0 after 59 minutes.

“It’s always difficult to explain these things,” said goalkeeper Yann Sommer, who played for Bayern in 2023, winning the German title.

“For us, the goal is always the same: to make life difficult for our opponents. We will need to have a lot of courage. They press high and aggressively, they are strong and we must make our presence felt and play the ball with courage. The big goal is to win this match.”

Inzaghi: ‘Pride’ over Inter transfers

Inzaghi said a financial disparity between Inter and clubs including Bayern meant it “hasn’t been easy for us to remain so competitive”.

“There has been a reduction in the budget, but Inter have always remained at the top thanks to the help of these great players and our club,” he added.

“Remaining so competitive with the reduction we have had over four years is like having won another trophy. It’s a source of great pride for all of us – me first, but I think of the entire club.”

Thomas Muller ‘number one for intensity’

Inzaghi paid tribute to Muller after the Bayern forward announced on Saturday that he will end his 25-year association with the club at the end of the season.

“He is a champion,” said Inzaghi. “He is a player who has won many titles and deserved them. He is number one for intensity.

“I respect him a lot and he has always created several problems for me when I’ve faced him.”
