Virgil van Dijk says ‘there has been progress’ over new deal at Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk says there has been progress in his talks with Liverpool over a new contract.

The Netherlands international’s current deal expires at the end of the season, as do those of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah.

While it is expected Alexander-Arnold will move to Real Madrid on a free transfer, Van Dijk and Salah have made it clear they want to remain at Anfield.

Speaking last month, Van Dijk said he had “no idea” if he was going to remain at the club but he offered a more positive assessment of how things stand when talking after yesterday’s 3-2 defeat at Fulham.

He told reporters: “There is progress, yeah.

“I don’t know [if I’ll stay], we’ll see. Listen, these are internal discussions and we’ll see.”

Liverpool fans desperate for Reds skipper to stay

Liverpool fans have been vocal in their desire for Van Dijk and Salah to stay and the former Celtic and Southampton centre-half says the admiration is mutual.

“I love the club, I love the fans and they were there for us again and we wanted to reward them,” he said.

“But I want them to be there on Sunday again [at home to West Ham United] and make the stadium an amazing venue like always for us.”

Fulham display was ‘unacceptable’ – Van Dijk

Liverpool suffered their first defeat on the road in the Premier League this season at Craven Cottage with Van Dijk looking uncharacteristically shaky.

They still sit 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League, though, and remain firmly on course to lift the trophy.

“It was a poor day at the office for all of us,” Van Dijk, 33, added.

“There were individual moments that should have been dealt with better. It was not acceptable as a team.

“First half, we scored a great goal, but we let them back into the game with sloppiness from ourselves and these things shouldn’t happen.

“Obviously second half we went one-v-one, we were trying as quickly as possible to get the second goal, we took a lot more risk. We tried to turn it around but unfortunately we couldn’t do it.

“On the first half, you can’t argue with the result. We have take it on the chin and try to beat West Ham next week.”
