Richard Burgheim, a founder editor of PEOPLE, has died. He was 91.
The pioneering journalist and St. Louis native died on Sunday, June 1, at Weill Cornell, based on an online obituary.
Burgheim started his profession in journalism at Harvard University, the place he served as sports activities editor of The Harvard Crimson, the Ivy League college’s pupil newspaper, in addition to the campus stringer for the Related Press.
He went on to develop into a author for TIME journal, the place he labored for a few years, and was later tapped by Richard B. Stolley, a Managing Editor, to function a Senior Editor for the then-soon-to-be-launched PEOPLE years in the past.

Andy Abrahams, a former PEOPLE Editorial Supervisor, met Burgheim as a truth checker at Time Inc.’s TV Cable Week journal. He recalled, “Dick wished us to know that we have been necessary within the course of, it doesn’t matter what our station was on the journal. He had a pure reward for hanging the fitting tone in a narrative, with a eager eye in direction of writing and enhancing for a mass viewers with humor and beauty.”

“He was sensible, humorous, barked like a seal when he laughed and was a real buddy and mentor,” added Cutler Durkee, a former PEOPLE Government Editor.
Burgheim is survived by his spouse, Ricki Fulman. Donations will be made in his honor to the New York Public Library.
